I am the twin sister of Ron Levy. He directed me to this website and like he, it brought back memories of my childhood and of the Sephardic Hebrew Center. I too like all the other children was afraid of Mr. Fiss. I too would walk across the street with my cousins Marilyn Israel and Mati Levy to the small liquor store and purchase red vines, doo-dads, abba zabbas, and other penny candies. Marilyn and Mati's mothers, my Aunt Sarah and Aunt Rebecca definitely prepared the best Sephardic food in the entire world. Both my brothers, Mickey and Ron had their Bar Mitzvahs at the Temple. I didn't have a Bat Mitzvah because Sweet 16's were more popular back in the early fifties for young women. I did however, have the privilege to stand on the altar and say a prayer with Ron to the Congregation. I remember attending and dancing at the Annual Sephardic Beauty Contest Balls that my father's club, The Maccabeans put on. My favorite of this website was listening to Jack Mayesh singing of "Mizerlu." I remember as a child listening to "Mizerlu" in our family living room on the old 78 record on our RCA wind-up victrola. I also remember sitting next to my mother in the sweltering heat of the women's balcony during those September and October High Holiday Services. The only problem with being Jewish is the blowing out of the candles on a sponge cake since my April 11th Birthday often occurs during Passover. Thanks to Aron Hasson for this site and for keeping Sephardic tradition alive.

What memories these testimonies and audios bring back. I was a child when I first went to the 55th and Hoover, Sephardic temple in L.A. My father Jack Levy and grandfather Solomon Israel were both quite active in the Temple. I remember sitting out in the lobby with other children eating candy on Yom Kippur when Mr Fiss, the Shamash would see us--all us kids were sure frightened of him--he would chase us out. We would buy candy across the street from the temple for one cent. The weather always seemed to be in the 90's when Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur occurred and we would all sweat in the un-airconditioned Temple with the ceiling fans going, but not doing much good. The women all attired in their hats sat upstairs in the balcony. My father went on to be the founder and President of the Young Men's Club, The Maccabean's. The move to Fairfax and Slauson was quite an improvement, but when merging to Westwood, I stopped attending services. I miss all the Sephardic food and all the shish-ke-bob barbecues back in those days. My mother, Victoria Levy is still living, but all the rest of my aunts and uncles have passed. The only time I visited the Wilshire Temple was when my Aunt Rebecca was honored for her book about the history of Rhodes and when her daughter Mati's son had his movie on Rhodes shown. I just contacted the Sisterhood of the Sephardic Temple and ordered five dozen biscochos, one dozen bourekas, and one dozen spinach boyus. They will be baked for me after the Passover Holidays. I haven't tasted them in years. Thank you for this wonderful site.

What beautiful, heart-felt shofar blowing. The voice of the makrei, caller, is so sweet. Wonderful. I have a site at www.HearingShofar.com where I offer advice on shofar blowing. I am going to post your site there so people can listen and learn.

It is a very personal family experience to be able to listen to "Alegra" (Levy's) audio, who was, the sole survivor of her immediate family, during the World War II bombings of the Island of Rhodes. Let me explain why, it is so personal: My grandfather, Victor M. Levy, (deceased), lost his brother, on that horrific day, during the bombings, however, "Alegra" Levy, survived, my grandfather's niece. My grandfather loved his brother and his family, so very much!

I was able to make a family trip to Rhodes, and witnessed in person, the blackened devastation of bombed out remnants of buildings and structures. Especially, awe inspiring were the expansive island "casas," that survived the bombings, which included nearby "Alhadeff Park," and the community Temple.

My personal thanks, on behalf of my grandfather, Victor M. Levy, in endorsing a member of his Levy family's Sephardic heritage and survival.

You (Rhodeslis) have a great past. Make the future greater as our parents passed on their history, lets make history together for them, we will bring them great honor.

Thank you so much for sharing this on the net. I sat and listened to my Uncle Morris blowing the shofar and Jack Mayesh singing and it brought back so many wonderful memories. Thank you again for what you have done.

What wonderful testaments to the rich heritage of our Los Angeles Sephardic Rhodesli community! As the granddaughter of Victor and Rachel (Alhadeff) Levy, and second cousin to Alegra Levi (Levy) Rosenthal, I am so very proud to remember my Ladino and to smile at the sounds of the "canticas"! Happy Rosh Hashanah, everyone!

I am the chazzan for a few of Morris Mizrahi's children and grandchildren in Los Angeles. I have heard many times about Morris' powerful shofar blowing. It is wonderful to now hear these recordings and to get a sense of Morris in his time and in his beloved community.
